Luminary Loppet Volunteer Opportunity

posted Jan 28, 2020, 5:32 AM by Wayzata Nordic
Dear Skiers -

Thank you for considering the chance to volunteer to have fun with your friends while being a part of the beautiful and festive Minneapolis Luminary Loppet event held on Lake of the Isles on Saturday, February 1st.

We are looking for 50 volunteers to light thousands of ice luminaries (giant candles made out of ice) from 5 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, February 1st.  We will work in "pairs" and be assigned different sections to light on Lake of the Isles, the channel between Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun, and a portion of Lake Calhoun.

You will have an opportunity to ski on the course prior to and during the event and get a nice hat for volunteering.

All volunteers should be on skis to help speed up the process.  Everyone should dress warm enough to be out lighting for an hour  including gloves that may allow for lighting matches and candles.  It may be a lot of standing around so please make sure to dress warmer than you think.  You should wear something that has Wayzata Nordic on it - so we will be identified as volunteers.

Please meet Megan Bennett at 4:30 pm at the tall ice columns on Lake of the Isles where Kenwood Parkway intersects with West Lake of the Isles Parkway. For ease of parking, you may wish to park on the Northwest side of Lake of the Isles (a couple blocks east of where Kenwood Parkway meets Lake of the Isles Parkway).  It is easiest to go east on 394 and exit at the Dunwoody exit.  Turn right at the first stoplight (in front of Dunwoody).  Go past Parade Ice Arena on your right.  Take a right at the stop sign and follow Kenwood Parkway for approx. 1 1/2 miles to Lake of the Isles.  It is probably easiest to park on Kenwood Parkway.  Walk down to the lake and ski or walk across the lake to our meeting spot.

We will be given supplies of matches, possible wind guards and a bag for transporting our supplies.  If you prefer to bring your own fanny pack and long-necked lighter or supplies please bring them.

Please let Coach Megan know if you have any other friends or family who would like to volunteer for this wonderful event. They are still looking for more!

If you, your friends or your parents have any questions, please call me at (952) 249-9707.

Thank you.
Megan Bennett
